Church Security Specialist Basic Training Course

The  goal of this training is to provide individuals with the basic skills and knowledge to serve effectively as a member of their church security ministry.  Utilizing a multi-platform instructional approach, this course includes on-line independent study, class lectures, hands-on skill development and scenario-based exercises.  All topics are delivered by instructors who are considered subject matter experts in their respective field.  The course scheduling format is designed with the volunteer in mind by balancing time spent in cohort with home and work life demands. 

Course Requirements

Prospective candidates must meet the following requirements to receive acceptance into the program:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age 

  • Must be formally sponsored and endorsed by a faith-based organization

  • Have not been convicted of a felony

  • Have not been convicted of a misdemeanor in the last 5 years

Level 1 Certification 

This 20-hour training program delivers standardized baseline skills required for anyone serving their church organization in a safety or security capacity.  Areas of instruction include:

  • Introduction to the Security Ministry

  • Conduct and authority 

  • Threats and vulnerabilities at houses of worship

  • Observation skills and hostile surveillance awareness

  • Security and safety operations

  • Criminal law, civil law and liability

  • Response procedures

  • Basic emergency medical care

  • Introduction to tactical casualty care

  • Active shooter awareness


Level 2 Certification

With Level 1 as a mandatory prerequisite, this 20-hour training program provides the skills necessary to mitigate hostile action and threats of violence.  Areas of instruction include:

  • Understanding force 

  • Violence awareness & mitigation

  • Subject control methods

  • Self-defense methods

  • Aerosol subject restraint

  • Preparing for mass casulties

  • Scenario-based exercises

Successful program completion requires full participation, passing all written and skill tests as well as a comprehensive course examination.

Refresher Training

Graduates of the CSS Basic Training Course who's organization are members of the Security Leaders Coalition are invited to return to any individual training module within the basic curriculum to receive refresher training or topic re-certification.

Church Security Specialist Training Course: ARMED CERTIFICATION

The  goal of this course is to provide individuals with the knowledge, firearm skills, tactics and decision making to serve effectively as an armed member of their church security team.  Course instructors are highly experienced subject matter experts in advanced firearms training methods, use-of-force, tactics and are certified law enforcement trainers.   

 

Course Requirements

Prospective candidates must meet the following requirements to receive acceptance into the program:

  • Be at least 21 years of age 

  • Be formally sponsored and endorsed by a faith-based organization

  • Must provide proof of a state-issued concealed pistol license

  • Note: Church Security Specialist Basic Training Course graduates receive roster priority

This intensive 16-hour program includes an in-depth examination of deadly force issues, intensive concealed firearms drills, shooting methods, decision making, advanced tactics and a formal qualification.  Sessions include:  

  • Legal and policy considerations

  • Equipment selection 

  • Concealment issues and deployment

  • Post shooting considerations

  • Live-fire exercises

  • Tactical considerations

  • Scenario-based exercises

  • Adverse light conditions

  • Movement & Team tactics

Successful program completion requires full participation, passing a comprehensive written examination and the prescribed task-oriented firearms qualification course.​

Church Security Specialist Leadership Development Course

This 20-hour course is designed for those who hold leadership and management roles in the security ministry.  With a focus on decision making, influence and strategic planning, this program is delivered by instructors that are pioneering leaders in the security ministry.

Course Requirements

Prospective candidates must meet the following requirements to receive acceptance into the program:

  • Be a CSS Basic Training Level 1 & 2 graduate

  • Be formally sponsored and endorsed by a faith-based organization

Sessions include delivery and discussion on the following topics:  

  • Leading in a faith-based organization

  • Security and safety issues

  • Risk management

  • Protective strategies

  • Vulnerability assessment

  • Incident command

  • Developing and managing a team

  • Policy and procedure writing and implementation

  • Public relations

  • Budgeting and resource management
